Floyd Mayweather Jr
Widely considered one of the most dominant fighters all time, and the greatest defensive fighter of all time, the 5"7 40 year old is comes into this fight with a 49 - 0 professional record, with notable victories over legendary boxers like Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao and our own Ricky Hatton. His public persona is one that is obsessed with wealth & extravagance, from calling his entourage "The Money Team", to carrying upwards of $15 million dollars in cash around, even going as far to change his moniker from "Pretty Boy Floyd", to "Floyd "Money" Mayweather". This has led him to be disliked by a number of people, especially those who view boxing as among the most noble sports in the world. None, however, can criticise his prowess in the Squared Circle.
Conor Mcgregor
He is the King of the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) world. The 29 year old Irishman, who is contracted to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), is the most popular man in combat sports today. Though a 21-3 record (where being undefeated never really happens), he has defeated major UFC stars like Jose Aldo, Eddie Alvarez and Chad Mendes, finishing them off with his boxing ability! He's incredibly outspoken, witty and funny, and he is as famous for his entertaining fight press conferences as well has his devastating KO power in the ring. Though this will be his first fight in the Squared Circle, he is determined to be the worlds greatest fighter!
The Fight
The fight is scheduled for Saturday, 26th of August, but won't be until around 5am in the morning UK time where they'll actually fight. Fan interest in ’The Billion Dollar Fight’ has reached fever pitch following the culmination of a crazy worldwide press tour, which made stops in Los Angeles, Toronto, Brooklyn and London. Both heavy boxing fans, and casual fans tried to catch glimpse of the two trash talkers exchange pleasantries and throw verbal jabs. Millions of boxing and mixed martial arts fans across the globe tuned into the presser online, it’s captured everyone’s imagination!
Though it is a boxing fight, and Mayweather is expected to win, there are a few things which throw the tide in McGregor's favour! Firstly, they normal 10 ounce gloves have been replaced with 8 ounce gloves, which means 2 ounces of foam have been taken out. This could prove vital for McGregor, who, as the bigger man, is said to have more knockout power than Mayweather. Secondly, the age difference. Mayweather is fighting a man 11 years his Junior, and has even said he is not the same fighter he was even two years ago. This brings me to my third point, being rustiness. Floyd Mayweather has not boxed competitively for 2 years, and even that fight you could see his age.
